FAQ
- How are Vedic baby names chosen?
- In the classical Namakarana ceremony, the baby's name begins with a specific syllable (akshara) tied to their birth nakshatra and pada. Each of the 27 nakshatras has 4 padas, each with its own starting sound. The Moon's exact position at birth determines the pada.
- Do I need to know the pada?
- Ideally yes — each nakshatra has 4 padas with different syllables. If you don't know, use our Nakshatra Finder to compute the exact pada from date, time, and place of birth. Otherwise, any syllable from the nakshatra's 4 padas is classically acceptable.
- Does the name really have to start with the pada syllable?
- Classical tradition strongly recommends it — the syllable carries the vibrational blessing of the nakshatra. Many modern families use the pada syllable only for the "official" Namakarana name and use a nickname/modern name for daily life.
- What if none of the suggested names appeal to me?
- The listed names are only examples. Any name starting with the pada syllable works classically. Consult a Pandit for the full Namakarana ritual and to verify nakshatra + pada.
- Are these names for Hindu babies only?
- The syllable rule comes from Vedic tradition but the names themselves span many Indian languages and traditions. Use the syllable as a starting point for any name tradition you follow.
